big fat liar is the greatest movie ever

I think I'd rather go through life having a good time and learning about things I want to learn about (let's be honest, if you say "i dont wanna learn nuffin" or are averse to learning then you're averse to living because that's all life is; if you don't learn you become a robot, programmed to do the same thing without question). I don't want to be someone who's hesitant to do something because they might get a bad grade or they won't get into a prestigious program that's really not that special in the big picture. If I do become that person that works and works and works to get to the top, once I get there I'll regret wasting all that time working, and not living. If I just blow off all committments for the sake of a good time, I'll regret not having valued the resources that I've been given. It's like being on both sides of a see-saw with an unpredictable center of gravity.

The title has nothing to do with this and needs no explanation.

People make weird noises when they yawn. And by people, I mean me.

i've been watching movies

Today: Zack and Miri Make a Porno
It's pretty straightforward. Nothing spectacular, but good film, holistically. There are funny parts.

Slumdog Millionaire
It's good. The ending is what I hoped it would be. Wasn't really sure what it was at the onset, but it was worth the watch.

Yesterday: The Wrestler
A lot better than I thought it'd be. It's hard to market; there's no good name for the movie and professional wrestling probably isn't everyone's foie gras. It's sad in the sense that all stories about has-beens who used to be the best at what they do and are now struggling to keep the dream alive are. Good acting, good film.

Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist
Michael Cera (Nick) does a good job. Not incredibly believable that all that would happen in one night to a group of highschool friends, but anything's possible in New York City, right?

Elephant directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Gerry, Milk)
Weird. I had absolutely no clue what it's about when I watched it (a columbine-esque event from several perspectives), so it caught me off guard. Bad acting, but clearly a low-budget film. I feel like half the movie is shots of the characters walking. Didn't really make sense at some points and seemed generally unbelievable (not in the 'fantastic' sense of the word). It did make me think about how hard it would be to shoot someone. Maybe I'm just not violent, but you have to be pretty fucked up to be able to look someone in the eye--someone you know and have gone to school with, someone who is completely harmless, someone who you have never interacted with--and shoot them in the stomach from ten feet with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Tuesday: Doubt
Better than I thought it would be. Maybe I'm a negatively judgemental person, this seems to be a trend. There are some characters who make me want to have the ability to be in the movie and thus be able to punch them in the face. I guess that means that they're good at acting. Meryl Streep's character is one of those people. Good, good movie.

The Reader
Has more in common with Zack and Miri make a Porno than I predicted. It's about a man retrospectively examining the events that lead up to, occur during, and then after an affair with an older woman during the 50s. It's definitely a drama. Good acting, though. Takes some unexpected twists and turns. I think the erotic aspect of it makes the viewer interested on a personal level with the outcome of the story.

Monday: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
It's predictable. Obviously, it's predictable; a man born old grows young, done. But there's more to it than that. It's long, kind of tedious, but interesting. Definitely makes you think when it's over. It was very well-written and had great actors. I liked the way a topic would be introduced and then it would recur throughout the film.

Sunday: Tropic Thunder
Not really worth the hype. I thought it was somewhat boring; it seemed too much like the terrible movie parodies that are out now. It was better than those, but not by much. There were some funny parts, but it didn't live up to my expectations.

Pineapple Express
Made me want to be a pot dealer. Better than I heard it was, I thought it was hilarious. There isn't really much to say about it, it wasn't deep, it didn't make me think, but it did make me laugh. Very different side of James Franco in this than in Milk.

Saturday: Milk
About a gay guy's attempt to climb the political ladder of California in the 70s. Kind of uncomfortable. Made me aware of the suppression gays face[d]. Sean Penn does a great job as Harvey Milk, as, to a lesser extent, does James Franco as whoever his guy was.

Gran Torino
The ending isn't predictable at all. Wasn't really what I wanted to see, either. At first. After a little bit I saw that what Clint Eastwood's character does is probably better than what I'd hoped for. Clint Eastwood is one of the most versatile actors in the biz.

Australia
The plot isn't what I expected. It's not bad, it's just not what I expected. The trailors make it out to be a lot more actiony than it is. It's a story about a lady from England whose husband lives in Australia on a cattle ranch called Faraway Downs. When the husband dies, she goes down to bury him and figure out what to do with the property, but finds that there are people that she rather fancies down under (no innuendo intended). It's good. Just good.

I can't wait to wake up tomorrow.
